My work explores the theme of Urban Alienation* – specifically the effect that Modern Life has had on our consciousness.
I sense that many people from my generation being raised in large urban centres have grown up in a developed world with what seems to be unlimited possibilities – for travel, lifestyle, education, opportunity and re-invention. However, all of this seems to come with confusion, alienation and a general feeling of inadequecy and unease.
Modern life to me is confusing. I often feel bombarded by the big world I live in. Its advertising messages, media images, the emergence of personal technology objects, re-definition of family units, a lack of meaningful connections between people, longer working hours and increased focus on material consumption.
Would less choices and stimuli change relieve urban alienation?
*Urban Alienation defined as the state of being withdrawn or isolated from the urban world, as through indifference or disaffection.
